Laura's Room Finished

I've been in Australia and New Zealand for 2 months and what with getting ready to go, then the going, I never posted about completing Laura's room:

Although we haven't made proper repairs to the fireplace as yet (it's difficult to source bits and pieces without a trip to the reclamation yard) it looks all the better for a coat of paint. The stripe paper is not strictly a children's wallpaper, but it's pretty and Laura shouldn't outgrow it, and if this ever becomes a guest bedroom, it's very suitable .. but for now, it's definitely a little girls room!

The problem that blocking the chimney breast caused

Old Fireplaces and Chimneys ... the stuff of nightmares ...

When we moved in this fireplace had been stuffed full of rubble. Every time it rained the chimney breast sweated buckets and we thought we needed the flashing sorted. Years of problems had caused the wallpaper to bubble and bulge in a really ugly fashion.

However an afternoon and several rubble sacks later and the chimney visibly breathed a sigh of relief. That was a year ago and since then not a droplet of water has appeared on the chimney breast.  I discovered that under it, the plaster was no longer ...

So repairs are taking place on the scruffy chimney breast.

The walls are covered in farm animals ...

There's nothing quite like stripping back walls and uncovering some vintage wall coverings from yesteryear .. This room has clearly spent much of it's lifetime being a children's bedroom (and still is), but I wonder what this pattern caused the little treasures to think they could "see" in the half-dark of night!

At first I found a man and a dog and an occasional stable ...

Then a "Julie Andrews" style shepherdess with a lonely lamb and a beautifully drawn tree ..

Then a (not so beautifully drawn) pony and trap

and then several churches! (sadly lurking somewhere behind the radiator, unable to be photographed)

It's hard to believe this "frenzied activity of country life" has been going on for decades  ... quietly going about its business under the later papered layers and layers ...

They just don't make wallpaper like they used to ....

The Last Antiques Fair ...

There's another antiques fair at Ardingly next week , and I still hadn't blogged about my purchases at the last one in November ...

I fell in love with these 2 antique Minton tiles, but annoyingly can't find out anything specific about them. Despite looking at many Minton tile designs online, I haven't seen anything like these 2 ladies:

One is slightly damaged and they are marked differently on the reverse (one is marked "Minton & Hollins" and the other "Minton's China Works") so maybe they weren't originally a pair? I'll keep looking ...

Although I wasn't looking for more pictures, I just "had to have this" framed poster:

The frame itself is old, it's a heavy dark wood suggesting this poster has been in this frame a while and maybe the frame itself originally held a mirror ..

But again, I can't find anything specific about this poster or to date it. I thought The Advertising Archives might have something on it, although they did have 4 entries for the RNLI, this poster wasn't one of them. You can find out about the history of the RNLI, but again .. nothing specific on this poster.

It hasn't found a place in the house yet, but we really do need to get on with renovating .. just need to stop spending the renovating money on antiques ...
